Basically, all electricity suppliers in the UK are allowed to provide electricity to homes and businesses at 230V +10% -5%, which in reality means that the voltage can be as high as 253V – much higher than what is actually needed.

Take a normal 230V rated filament lamp – when run at 240V, it will fail after 550 hours instead of 1000, drawing nine per cent more energy.
