Hazardous Areas

We are CompEx accredited to work in ATEX areas.

Environments with gaseous elements or those that create dust (e.g. food manufacturing, sawmills, flour mills, concrete and building products manufacture) are classed as ATEX areas (potentially Explosive Atmospheres).  AES is one of a small number of electrical contracting businesses qualified to work in such environments under CompEx accreditation.

Protecting your business

Accidents in an ATEX area can sadly lead to fatalities. Working with a CompEx accredited partner such as AES ensures that you are doing everything possible to protect your staff and mitigate risk.  Working with AES on projects within these hazardous areas is a best practice approach to preventing serious incidents. We provide a professional service with a full audit trail to ensure that the correct precautions are followed, in line with health and safety guidelines and regulation.

Full ATEX turnkey service

AES can offer a complete end-to-end service to manufacturing businesses with hazardous areas, as well as providing key stand-alone services.  As standard procedure within our Hazardous Areas service, we inspect and test all installations regularly to ensure that they are not falling below the high-performance standards required within an ATEX environment.

What is CompEx?

CompEx is a recognised worldwide training and assessment scheme to ensure that those working in hazardous or explosive environments, whether on land or offshore, are fully trained and competent.  The name CompEx refers to Competency working in Explosive environments.  CompEx accreditation is essential for working within these hazardous areas – it protects staff and contractors working on-site and protects your company’s assets (such as buildings and equipment). Businesses operating in these fields can often benefit from lower insurance costs as a result of working with a CompEx accredited partner.

AES employees with CompEx accreditation are competent in selecting, installing, inspecting, and maintaining electrical apparatus in potentially explosive atmospheres, in line with BS EN 60079.

Classification of Zones

A classification of zones is required to ensure that you are operating within the guidelines and taking the necessary precautions within each area.  This classification will identify areas with a high chance of an explosive atmosphere occurring and those where it may only occur occasionally or in abnormal circumstances.  AES can help you fully assess your areas and ensure that the zones are classified correctly in line with DSEAR (Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations).

Design

Once we have fully assessed and classified your ATEX zones, we will use the DSEAR report to design a solution that gives you optimum protection for your business.

Installation

Our expert team will carry out the onsite installation of the specified design in a safe and controlled manner with tested and accredited products.

Verification

A formal verification stage must take place before the equipment is placed into service. This confirms that an any works have been installed correctly in line with BS EN 60079 and the design specification for the correct zone classification.

Inspection & Testing

This should be carried out at regular intervals in line with BS EN 60079 to ensure that the existing installation is still suitable for its application. This will provide peace of mind that the equipment and protection methods are still being maintained and have not been detrimentally affected or damaged whilst in service.
