Advanced Electrical may be over 30 years old, but to me it still feels like a young company. I don’t think anyone who knows us could say that nothing ever changes, because more or less everything has changed over the last few years, and it continues to do so.

For example, who would have thought a few years ago that we would have the company newsletter you are reading now (I think this is edition 14!) or that we would have 20-plus employees. The only thing that hasn’t changed is the fact that everyone who works here takes pride in what they do.

I was recently asked how far we think we can take the company; my usual response to this is that we aren’t planning global domination any time soon and let’s just see where the journey takes us. That being said, of course we need to plan and to set goals. A couple of years ago we started investing in additional training so that we could offer our services in hazardous areas. Now we are able to market this new service to our customers.

We feel there is a gap in the market for an electrical engineering company that offers support to industrial and manufacturing companies who work in hazardous areas. Most contractors accredited by CompEx (the training standard) are only interested in the gas and oil sectors and maybe petrol filling stations. However, a lot of our existing and potential new customers have dust and gas in their processes, which may also be deemed as potentially hazardous, and we know that they have been struggling to find the right company to assist with their legal obligations.

The requirements for hazardous areas took a big leap forwards after the Piper Alpha oil platform disaster in 1988, which killed 167 people. The CompEx qualification required to work in a hazardous environment is gained by the individual carrying out the work and not the actual contracting company, much like the Gas Safe qualification for gas engineers. Richard, our design engineer, is now a CompEx qualified designer and a few of our guys are now CompEx qualified for installation work on site.

Another area we will focus on in the future is machine safety. This is another area where businesses often need support to ensure the existing machine safety systems are fit for purpose and maintained to the correct standard. Any existing support out there can be incredibly expensive and tends to be offered only using a certain manufacturer of products, but this is another road to go down another day, although it is a service we offer if requested.

So back to the question of where can we take the company. Well, despite our growth over the last few years there is still a fair bit to go at. The electrical contracting industry is worth approximately £16bn to the economy and, for the record, our market share is 0.000094%, so yeah, there’s plenty more scope.

That being said, the driving force behind Advanced Electrical is the need to be better not bigger!
