Here at AES HQ, we know how easy it is for people to get their wires crossed. Us Yorkshire folk are known for handing out down-to-earth advice – whether you ask for it or not. So send us your questions, queries and quandaries and our resident expert, Richard Dent – Estimating & Design Engineer, will do his best to answer them. Even the daft ones.

Dear Richard
Are there any shows coming up that might be useful for electricians and electrical engineers?
Keen from Keighley

There’s no business like show business – but I’m guessing you’re thinking less of musical theatre and more of exhibitions, so why not sing and dance your way over to Merseyside this autumn.

NICEIC ELECSA Live 2017 North will be held at Aintree Racecourse on 23 November 2017 – as you may know, NICEIC and ELECSA are the leading UK membership bodies for the electrical contracting industry.

The trade exhibition has stalls, speakers, seminars and more, with former England defender Stuart Pearce MBE as the keynote speaker. Seminars will cover everything from smart homes and power tool technology to recent changes to emergency lighting and fire standards.

Visit www.niceic-elecsalive.com for further information and booking.

Dear Richard
I’m about to start work at a chemical plant – what can you tell me about CompEx accreditation?
Diligent from Dewsbury

CompEx is accreditation for working in hazardous or explosive environments. Luckily for you, we have a special feature on CompEx in this edition of Wired, which should tell you all you need to know.

Dear Richard
I’m worried there might be another election soon and I really can’t face another one. What should I do?
Brenda from Bristol
Hibernate. Or emigrate (while you still can).

Dear Richard
We usually have music on in the background at work – what would your playlist be?
Pitch Perfect from Preston
Good question. My musical tastes are very wide ranging, but here’s a selection:

She’s Electric by Oasis, Electric Avenue by Eddy Grant, The Electric Co by U2, Danger! High Voltage by Electric Six. And, of course, Jimi Hendrix’s Electric Ladyland.

Dear Richard
My best mate is a big Elvis fan. Any ideas for an original birthday present for him?
Generous from Guiseley
Your friend will never be lonesome tonight if you treat him to The King Look-Alite Lamp from www.findmeagift.co.uk.

Unless he’s got a wooden heart, he’ll be all shook up by this unique novelty lamp, where Elvis’s head doubles up as a lampshade.

As the site says: “Imagine one of these on your work desk or as table centrepieces at a retro party or Elvis wedding!” I’m sure you can…

The King Look-Alite Lamp works off batteries or a USB cable connected to your computer. It also says: “Thank you very much” every time you turn it on. Actually I made that last bit up, but wouldn’t it be great if it did?
