AES steps in for Harrison Spinks
Harrison Spinks is a manufacturer of bespoke hand-made luxury mattresses and divans, using natural materials including wool from sheep raised on its own farm.
Established in 1840 and based across four sites on an industrial estate in south Leeds and its own farm and holiday lets business at Bolton Percy, the company has won many awards, including two prestigious Queen’s Awards for Enterprise, in Innovation and Sustainable Development.
The company was facing a tight timescale to complete a new extension to the factory intended for the storage of finished products, including additional loading docks. This was due to come online for operational reasons but facing challenges because of the nature of the building and access for construction purposes.
First, it was very tight on space, making it difficult for multiple contractors to work at the same time, because the majority of the installation and fitting out required was aerial work.
Acting as consultants, AES stepped in installed all the electrical services, which included the design and fit out of internal and external lighting; they also provided all the containment and cabling requirements for the fire, intruder alarms, access control and CCTV systems in addition to the heating, data cabling, music and PA systems.
The building contractors began digging out the foundations in May and the steelwork and structure was erected and the building made water tight before AES could begin their work in September. The unit was operational by October and AES then completed the car park and other exterior lighting in November, including LED lighting for new signage on the buildings.
“It was Lee and the support from AES that enabled the project to be managed very successfully,” says John Berry, Project Manager at Harrison Spinks. “They did all of the containment work and cabling run in the same hit rather than us having to rely on and coordinate a lot of different contractors fighting for the same roof space. It was more economical that way and they did a very professional job.”
“I’m very happy with the end result,” says John Berry. “AES did the lighting design and selected and made proposals for the light fittings that matched our requirements in terms of loom levels. It was a top-class job.”
While Harrison Spinks has hired AES as an electrical contractor in the past, recent success has led to additional demand on the business, which will require electrical support moving forwards. Future potential projects include a former technical college, which Harrison is refurbishing as a new administrative headquarters for the group.
Another Happy Customer: “I’d be very happy to use AES again and certainly happy to recommend them to other customers or prospective customers,” says John Berry. “They are involved in around four other projects within the business currently and Lee is now our first port of call to help us with project work. We look forward to doing business with them in the future.”
