Here, in our regular jargon buster we dispel some of the mystery behind grandiose sounding terminology that is all too often used in our industry. At AES, we believe in plain speaking-saying how it is. What else would you expect from a Yorkshire-based business!

So, here we go; voltage optimisation – what is it, how can it help me and how much does it cost?

You don’t need to know much more than that. See what we mean about being direct and, in most cases, you don’t need to know: what it is. But we are going to share that bit with you anyway:

What is voltage optimisation?

Basically, all electricity suppliers in the UK are allowed to provide electricity to homes and businesses at 230V ¬±6%, which in reality means that the voltage can be as high as 253V,  much higher than what is actually needed.

So what?  Well, you pay for the voltage used, so if for half the year the electricity you use is supplied at, for example, 253V, your electricity bill will be 10% higher than had it been supplied at 230V for that period.

And, by the way, your equipment is designed to work at 230V, so as well as costing you more it can potentially lead to reduced lifetime and higher maintenance. That’s because your machines are running at a higher speed than they are designed to, which results in excessive heat and wear.

How do the electricity suppliers get away with that?

They do because of European legislation regarding the harmonisation of voltage across all countries. Need we say more!  Incidentally, there’s no real incentive for suppliers to provide energy within a closer band to the 230V because 6% is within the agreed, legal levels‚ and they get paid for all the energy you use when it is above 230V anyway!

How does voltage optimisation work?

Easy, all it does is optimise incoming supply voltage so that it is always very close to the 230V it should be.

I’ll have some of that?
We agree, its common sense really and we like that in our business too!

But is it right for my business?

Voltage optimisation benefits all types of businesses large and small by ensuring voltage remains closer to the 230V.

How do I install voltage optimisation?

Just give us a call and we do the rest. We first carry out an audit of your building or site‚ power requirements, such as load requirements and business size. We then propose a specific plan of action to ensure that your savings are maximised.

How long is the payback?

The pay back from installing a Voltage Optimisation solution is between 1-3 years, depending on the size of your business and energy usage.

That means within a few years your business could be benefiting from real savings that can invested back into other areas. A quick check of your last annual energy bill will give you an idea of how much this could be!

What’s the catch?

There aren’t any, just ask the people in the many businesses around the UK we have helped with a voltage optimisation solution over the last few years.

So there you have it, volume optimisation is a great way of reducing your energy bills and saving you money in the process. And, if you want to impress your green-minded customers, using less energy also reduces your CO2 emissions.

We hope that gives you a better idea of what it’s all about. As with many things in life, it’s a grand title for something that is simply common sense.

Call us today if you’re still itching to understand the techie aspects a little bit more, we’d love to talk to you!
